A significant security presence has been deployed across Tanzania with officers and soldiers observed on patrol in key urban areas in anticipation of expected anti-government protests called to coincide with independence day.

As of noon, however, no protests had materialized.

Residents in several major urban centers reported an unusually slow start to the day, with a large number opting to stay home amid uncertainty over if the demonstrations would proceed.

The demonstrations were called to demand political reforms following October's post-election unrest which left an unknown number of people dead.

Government Acknowledges Use of Force

Officials have conceded employing force against demonstrators, claiming that some groups were attempting to overthrow the regime.

On Tuesday, reporters observed streets that were largely deserted in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This was a stark contrast to the city's usual weekday bustle.

While quiet, a palpable tension filled the air.

Heightened Security Across Cities

Armored vehicles were spotted cruising along major roads and intersections, while officers took up positions at strategic locations, including around important public buildings and facilities.

On social media, activists and campaigners urged followers to remain vigilant, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. The messaging echoed past mobilization efforts in the country, when turnout increased later in the day.

Drivers who went out experienced regular stops at security checkpoints, where police interrogated motorists about where they were headed.

Official Position and Prohibitions

Authorities have not provided detailed comments on the increased security or on the scheduled demonstrations.

The government has prohibited the intended demonstrations and called off independence anniversary events, advising the public to remain at home.

"With many staying at home the atmosphere is quiet but tense."

The overall situation painted a picture of a country under strain, where the threat of protest resulted in a preemptive security lockdown that left conspicuously quiet typically busy cities.
